About the Speaker
Dr. Denis De Castro Halis has over 25 years of experience in teaching, research, and university administration across several world regions, including the Caribbean (University of the West Indies, Barbados), Asia (University of Macau), Brazil (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, UNESA), Europe (University of Copenhagen, Denmark), the USA (University of California – Santa Cruz), and Mozambique.
He holds two PhDs (in Law from UNESA/Rio de Janeiro and in Sociology from the University of Macau), a Master’s in Law and Sociology (UFF), a Postgraduate Course in Education (UERJ), and Bachelor’s degrees in Law (UFRJ) and Social Sciences (UERJ).
Dr. De Castro Halis has supervised more than ten PhD and Master’s students and coordinated research at two Brazilian universities. He also teaches Legal Interpretation and Comparative Law for Brazilian judges and judiciary officials.
He coordinates the Research Network “Comparative Constitutional Law and Legal Culture: Asia and the Americas” and the International Research Collaborative “The State and the Corporation as Legal Fictions: Original Nation and Dissent” within the Law and Society Association (LSA). A trustee of the Asian Law and Society Association (ALSA), he regularly organizes and co-chairs international academic events.
He co-edited The BRICS-Lawyers’ Guide to Global Cooperation (Cambridge University Press, 2017) and serves as an Executive Member of the International Law Committee of the Brazilian Bar – Rio de Janeiro.
His research interests include Offshore Financial Law, Company Law, Corporate Responsibilities and Dissent, Socio-Legal Theory, and Legal Interpretation.
